Let's face it: Lego is the standard by which so many toys these days are measured--and fall short. In a world where creativity seems to be going out the window, replaced by step-by-step instructions for proper construction of toys with pre-determined stories, Legos are basically stackable blank slates. This particular bucket o' blocks features 1,000 small elementary pieces. A pamphlet with 13 instructions (and 28 ideas) is included, inspiring young builders to create anything from clowns to dinosaurs, but most children will probably do their own thing anyway&flying tractors, anyone? Parents and kids will love the big, sturdy blue storage tub with space enough to hold far more than 1,000 Legos. A true classic.

For the toddler who's just discovering construction toys, the Mega Blocks Wagon is a simple way to take building materials from site to site. Topped with a sturdy plastic handle, the wagon is just over a foot high and runs on four 6-inch plastic wheels. Inside are 50 assorted Mega Blocks. (These are mostly plain blocks but include a car and two people blocks.) The side of the wagon has a row of Mega Blocks knobs, so grand structures can be created right on the top of the wagon.

Pirate ship needn't be all rough and unpleasant. In this sunny and cheerful play set from K'Nex, we see the happier side of buccaneer living as the seafaring brutes have evidently abandoned their life of crime on the high seas and opted to open a theme park complete with pirate themed rides. The 462-piece kit allows budding engineers to construct three motorized models: a g-force ride with spinning seats, a swinging ship ride (the one perhaps most familiar to anyone who's attended a carnival), and a boom ride with the pirate ship being counter-weighted by a boom. There are four pirate guys on hand to go aboard the rides, enjoy the fun, and put the whole unpleasant walk-the-plank lifestyle behind them.
